ESPNU Warrior Classic a men’s college lacrosse doubleheader, has a new home at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., home of Major League Lacrosse’s Charlotte Hounds.

The third annual event will be played Saturday, April 14, and will feature Rutgers vs. No. 7 Syracuse in the first game at 11 a.m. ET, followed by No. 11 Hofstra vs. No. 6 North Carolina at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be televised on ESPNU.

Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children, senior citizens and students with school ID. Group discounts will also be available at $12 per ticket (minimum 50 people).

Hofstra, North Carolina and Syracuse all reached the NCAA Championship in 2011. North Carolina has won four national titles and played in five consecutive postseason tournaments, after posting a 10-6 record in 2011. Syracuse has won 10 NCAA titles, the highest total among all schools, and went 15-2 a year ago. Hofstra finished 13-3 last season and reached the NCAA Championship for a school-record fourth consecutive time. Rutgers held a 5-8 record last season, and is now under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Brecht.

“We are thrilled and honored for the opportunity to be a part of the ESPNU Warrior Classic in Charlotte,” said North Carolina head coach Joe Breschi. “There are so many UNC fans across the great state of North Carolina and this will give the Tar Heel faithful an opportunity to see the Carolina Blue in action. With the growth of the sport in the South and the addition of an MLL team in Charlotte, this should be a sold out event!! Go Heels.”

“We are thrilled about being part of bringing Division I lacrosse excitement to a growing area like Charlotte in the ESPNU Warrior Classic,” said Hofstra head coach Seth Tierney. “The opportunity to expose our program and help grow the sport in a great sports town like Charlotte is quite exciting. Like last year in Connecticut, we thank ESPNU for putting together another great day of lacrosse.”

“We’re excited about being part of this event,” said Syracuse head coach John Desko. “It’s unique for our program and our players to play in Charlotte and to receive some exposure there that we otherwise wouldn’t. We thank ESPN for that opportunity and look forward to facing Rutgers, one our conference rivals, on the national stage.”

“Rutgers is very excited to be part of such a prestigious event, and we want to thank ESPN, Warrior and New Balance for this opportunity,” said Rutgers’ Brecht. “Playing in a major league stadium and being part of a doubleheader with three other top 10 programs provides Rutgers with great national exposure, as well as giving our student-athletes an unbelievable experience that they will always remember.”

The first two years of the ESPNU Warrior Classic were played at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. In the inaugural ESPNU Warrior Classic in 2010, Denver defeated Fairfield and Massachusetts defeated Georgetown. Last season, Syracuse defeated Rutgers and Hofstra defeated Massachusetts.

The show continues on its eight-week journey each Saturday morning and evening with the college basketball program originating from the site of ESPN’s Saturday Primetime Presented by DIRECTV telecast – this week showcasing Washington at Arizona at 7 p.m. on ESPN and ESPN3.

For the eighth year, Rece Davis serves as point guard for the College GameDay desk, and is joined by analysts Jay Bilas, Digger Phelps, Hubert Davis and Bob

Knight to preview all the day’s action and discuss the biggest storylines in college basketball. Dan Shulman, along with Knight and Bilas, will have the call of the primetime game.

This week’s College GameDay will air a special segment – Tanner’s Totes, featuring Clemson forward Tanner Smith, who gives tote bags filled with gifts to pre-teens who are hospitalized with cancer. It is a mission Smith has been fulfilling since he was 12, after growing up watching his father battle cancer. Rece Davis will also pit two Arizona teammates against each other – in GameDay’s own Know Your Teammate game.

Spotlight: Dick Vitale

Basketball Hall of Famer Dick Vitale is in his 33rd year as an analyst with ESPN and hasn’t let longevity slow him down. He continues to work a full schedule calling multiple games each week – including ESPN’s Saturday Primetime game-of-the- week series – and making appearances across multiple ESPN platforms and shows. In addition to his analyst duties, Dick works tirelessly to raise money for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Last year’s Dick Vitale Gala raised $1.3 million for pediatric cancer.

You started at ESPN in 1979 and haven’t slowed down. How do you keep your energy to keep going strong?
First, I’m blessed. You know, I wake up every day with a goal and purpose with what I want to achieve. I write down three things that I want to accomplish for that day every morning.

What is it like to go onto different campuses every week and still feel the excitement of the fans?
It’s amazing. Just last Saturday, when I walked into the Oakland Zoo in Pittsburgh, the fans were chanting “Dickie V, Dickie V, Dickie V.” I got goose bumps. I pinch myself. I am so honored. My mother and father taught me a long time ago, they said “be good to people.” They always said if you are good to people, they will be good to you. I’m a big believer that all people are the same and no one is better than anyone else. I always try to treat people with respect.

Are you getting ready for the seventh annual Dick Vitale Gala benefiting The V Foundation on May 18?
Oh yea. We are so honored to have a mixture of football and basketball honorees with Lou Holtz, Gary Williams and Jay Wright. We want to make it better and different every year. I can’t reveal anything we’re working on yet but we will have some special stuff this year. Fans can go to dickvitaleonline.com for details on how to attend or donate.

What are some of the factors you consider when choosing the Dickie V Game-of-the-Week re-air that is on ESPNU on Sunday nights?
It’s so great to give the fans a chance to see a special game from the week. I look for what any fan would, if it was an exciting game, if people would really enjoy watching, any surprises in it.

College Basketball takes center court this week but ESPN’s coverage of National Signing Day is warming up the sidelines for 10-hours of continuous coverage on ESPNU next Wednesday.

Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) – College Basketball Featured rewinds fans through some of ESPN’s best basketball features this week, including Sports Science: Harrison Barnes (North Carolina) getting air; Logistics of the Game: Doron Lamb (Kentucky); and the story of Thomas Robinson (Kansas) and how his second-family of teammates pulled him through a traumatic year.

Wednesday (6 p.m.) – ESPNU All-Access: North Carolina State goes inside the newly redesigned basketball facilities with first-year head coach Mark Gottfried. ESPNU cameras follow senior guard C.J. Williams around town and catch some of he and Scott Wood’s trick shots after practice. Gottfried and assistant coaches Orlando Early and Bobby Lutz are wired at team meetings and practice.

Next Tuesday (4 p.m.) – ESPNU kicks-off its National Signing Day coverage with a preview special hosted by Dari Nowkhah, followed by 10-hours of continuous live coverage the following day from ESPNU’s Charlotte studio and campuses around the nation. Join the conversation by following @ESPNU and #signingday.

Verizon’s FiOS1 and Star-Ledger/NJ.com have signed deal for exclusive rights to All New Jersey State High School Sports Through 2015.

This agreement makes FiOS1 the exclusive broadcast partner of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.

FiOS1, Channel 1 on Verizon’s FiOS TV, will broadcast 36 regular-season high school games – including basketball, football, lacrosse and soccer – and feature some of the top matchups between rival schools across the state. In addition, FiOS1 has exclusive television broadcast rights to all New Jersey state high school sports playoff and championship games through the 2015 season.

The agreement solidifies FiOS1′s position of a leading provider of local high school television sports programming in New Jersey. Featured games will air at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays on FiOS1, with replays throughout the week. Games also will be available through FiOS TV’s video-on-demand service.

“This exclusive high school sports programming is another reason why FiOS1 continues to grow as a destination for FiOS TV customers to tune into for news, entertainment and sports programming,” said Michelle Webb, FiOS1′s director of programming. “With our partner, Star-Ledger/NJ.com, we will be able to bring viewers unique content they won’t be able to find anywhere else.”

In addition to the exclusive broadcast rights to the high school sporting events, the partnership with Star-Ledger/NJ.com includes online streaming of games at NJ.com, promotional opportunities and co-branding of games. The Star-Ledger/NJ.com is New Jersey’s premier multimedia news organization, reaching millions of New Jersey residents via print, online, mobile, email and tablet channels. In 2011, the Star-Ledger’s newsroom was honored with a Pulitzer Prize, four New York Emmy awards and more than 30 first-place journalism awards at the state, regional and national level.

Bob Provost, director of marketing for the Star-Ledger, said: “FiOS1 has led the way in their commitment to consistent, weekly televised coverage of New Jersey’s high school sports competition. We have found them to be a terrific media partner and complement to the Star-Ledger/NJ.com’s statewide print and digital coverage of all 32 NJSIAA sports at over 400 high schools across the state. We look forward to taking things to the next level.”

Earlier this year, FiOS1 partnered with Star-Ledger/NJ.com to air exclusively for FiOS TV customers in northern New Jersey the high school basketball title game between St. Patrick’s and St. Anthony’s on March 12, widely regarded as the nation’s No. 1 high school basketball matchup of the year.

Steven Timko, executive director, NJSIAA, said: “We appreciate the continued FiOS1 commitment to covering NJSIAA competition. We have had many organizations approach us over the years about televising a high-profile game or several games over the course of a school year, but FiOS1 was the first TV operation to support the NJSIAA with an annual sponsorship commitment, and a multiyear one at that. With this new agreement, they are extending and expanding that support.”

FiOS1 is part of FiOS TV’s broad collection of programming featuring more than 540 all-digital channels including more than 130 high-definition channels and 30,000 monthly VOD titles. FiOS TV also provides next-generation interactive services including an advanced interactive media guide; social network, news and entertainment widgets; remote DVR management via broadband, mobile phones and Flex View.

Heroes and heroic moments will be remembered as the10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches. One story will be of a former Boston College lacrosse player who became known as the “Man in the Red Bandanna” after dying heroically while saving lives in the World Trade Center. Welles Crowther, an equities trader, was identified by survivors as the mysterious “Man in the Red Bandanna” who made at least two trips to the South Tower’s burning 78th floor sky lobby and guided as many as 12 people to safety. Although he could have saved himself, Crowther, who died when the tower collapsed, chose to help total strangers. Actor/director Edward Burns narrates the piece written by ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi.

“When I wiped it (blood off my glasses), I looked around, I said, ‘Oh my God, there’s a lot of people completely dead.’ We looked around the floor, I said, ‘Well we really can’t move because we don’t know what happened.’ We were afraid that if we were going to take a step, the whole thing was going to sink in. Then all of a sudden we saw a young man come out of nowhere — you heard this man’s voice say, ‘I found the stairs, follow me. Only help the ones that you can help.’ It’s the way he said it – and we just got up, we followed.” – Ling Young, on being saved by Welles Crowther

“Wearing that red bandana is absolutely an honor to be able to remember Welles and even a bigger honor to be able to try to let the Crowther family know that they’re not alone.” — Tyler Jewell, Welles’ teammate at Boston College, who wore a red bandanna in his honor while competing as a snowboarder in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games

There is next to no reason the University of Oregon should have a good football team. Eugene is a small city and is not near a major media market, there’s very little local college-caliber talent, and for literally 100 years the Ducks did almost nothing but lose. But the past decade and a half has been different. They’ve been to the Rose Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and last year’s national championship game, and they will start this season Saturday night against Louisiana State in Arlington, Texas, ranked third in the country. How did this happen? Michael Kruse reports.
