Comcast tests for the deployment of 100-gigabit optics

After Verizon claimed last November, that Verizon have completed a live 312-mile network route between Tampa, Fla., and Miami the first test of 100-gigabit-per-second optical transmission, Comcast also announced that they have conducted the same 100-Gps optical networking equipment which will carry live Internet traffic over a production fiber infrastructure, last week. Yes, this test by Comcast is going to be different in many reasons comparing New York based Verizon Communications as they used the FiOS TV network’s live feed and Alcatel-Lucent’s optical equipment but Comcast says they are using Cisco Systems gear and running live traffic with the 100-gigabit-per-second optical transmission wavelengths running over the existing 40 gigabit-per-second wavelength physical fiber. Comcasts 100-gigabit-per-second optical transmission offering will be ready by the second quarter of 2009.
“This is a significant milestone in readying for the deployment of 100-gigabit optics,” John Schanz, executive vice president of national engineering and technical operations for Comcast , said in an interview. “It’s an enabling building block for going to wideband.”
