DirecTV started its high-definition expansion last week, when the satcaster announced that they have launched 31 HD channels. Now the satcaster is moving ahead with launch of local HD channels. DirecTV has launched local HD programming to customers in the Rochester, N.Y. designated market area.
WHAM/ABC, WROC/CBS, WUHF/FOX and WHEC/NBC are the broadcast networks available in high-definition. With this launch, DirecTV now offers local HD broadcast channels in 79 cities, representing nearly 77 percent of U.S. TV households.
DirecTV’s launch of local HD channels in Rochester is a part of its HD expansion announced earlier and the satcaster is planning launch more local HD channels. DirecTV is planning to add 44 new HD local channel markets by the end of 2008. DIRECTV will provide local HD broadcast channels in 121 cities, representing more than 88 percent of U.S. TV households. DIRECTV also recently expanded its HD programming lineup and now offers more than 130 HD channels.

MY brother & I like to watch Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy on WROC 8. We were looking forward to see them in HD and instead, it was still in 4:3 and cropped from the SD simulcast. We were disappointed and even on the guide, they were still marked as “HD”. When will Wheel & Jeopardy be in HD?!!!
