DirecTV, NBC signs to bring ‘Friday Night Lights’ for a third season

Award-winning American serial drama television series ‘Friday Night Lights‘ (FNL) Produced by NBC Universal will make a come back for a third season on DirecTV’ from 1st of October 2008. NBC announced this officially on Wednesday. DirecTV to bring 13 episodes of the FNL in high-definition on their entertainment channel The 101. NBC will start its broadcasting the third season episodes on Fridays at 9.00 to 10.00 PM ET starting after the Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.

This was announced on Wednesday by Ben Silverman, co-chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, Marc Graboff, co-chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, and Eric Shanks, DirecTV’s executive vice president of entertainment.

Until the agreement is reached there was a doubt on the future of the show. The award winning series centers on life in Dillon, Texas, where high school football brings the community together and the drama of small town life threatens to tear it apart. But the show struggled in the ratings. The viewers wanted the show back and fought hard by launching SaveFridayNightLights.tv and requesting the fans to send donations to fill NBC entertainment Chief Ben Silverman’s mailbox with miniature plastic footballs.

“We’re all about quality TV at NBC Universal and we’re beyond thrilled that we have structured an innovative deal that allows us to continue to produce and air this beloved series,” NBC co-chair Ben Silverman said in NBC’s statement. “This landmark deal is a win-win for NBC, Universal Media Studios and DIRECTV, not to mention the many passionate fans who adore “Friday Night Lights.”

“This mutually beneficial agreement shows that we are very flexible in providing additional platforms that will allow quality shows such as ‘Friday Night Lights’ to keep turning out wonderful stories,” said Graboff. “This represents a new business model and DIRECTV is the perfect partner for this new venture.”

This deal will give DirecTV one more exclusive programming apart from NFL Sunday Ticket and NASCAR Hotpass. DirecTV will utilize the opportunity to bring new customers and also satisfy the existing customers
