DirecTV’s New Satellite DIRECTV 11 Launched successfully
SeaLaunch successfully launches DIRECTV 11 satellite into the space on Wednesday, 19 March at 22.48 GMT from Odyssey Launch Platform. The satellite weighing 5,923kgs lifted off from an oceangoing platform as per schedule and will be positioned at 154 degrees West Longitude 22,236 miles from the Earth. DIRECTV-11, a Boeing 702 Satellite is the largest and most powerful Ka-band satellites built to date, once operational will provide DirecTV (along with DirecTV 10 Satellite in the orbit) enough bandwidth to deliver 150 national and 1,500 local high-definition channels. DIRECTV 11 is expected to make the first contact through a ground station in South Africa and this will take several hours.
DIRECTV 11’s primary target is to deliver National high-definition channels and Spot Beamed high-definition Local coverage. DIRECTV 11 will take at least 60 days to deliver new high-definition channels and DirecTV customers can be rest assured the roll out of new channels probably would begin by May 20.
The new satellite launched today is dedicated to Arthur C. Clarke, who died on 18 March, Clarke, most famous for his “2001: A Space Odyssey” and has contributed more than 100 sci-fi books. Clarke was first to make evident placing satellites into geosynchronous and geostationary orbits.
