ESPN To Launch Los Angeles Local Website On December 21

December 4, 2009

George Bodenheimer, ESPN and ABC Sports President has announced that local website for Los Angeles will be launched on December 21. ESPN’s ESPNLosAngeles.com website will be launched before Christmas Day basketball game doubleheader, which kicks off with a broadcast of a Los Angeles Lakers game.

ESPN is also expected to launch New York local website during first week of April before the start of 2010 baseball season.

ESPN has already launched local websites in Chicago, Dallas and Boston. ESPN is also planning to launch local websites in 20 more cities that includes New York, Chicago, Dallas, Boston and Pittsburgh.

ESPNLosAngeles.com will be similar to ESPNBoston and can expect following features:

Breaking sports news and information

Clubhouse pages from professional and college leagues

Community tools such as Fan Profiles, SportsNation chats and polls, ESPN Conversations pages and ESPN Travel Passport,
ESPN.com’s digital fan scrapbook

Coverage of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles D-Fenders and more

ESPNLosAngeles.com Mobile site and podcasts

Online video, including highlights, news, analysis and original content from ESPN programs including Baseball Tonight, NFL Live, College Football Live and more

Original reporting, blogs and commentary from a stable of local voices

Real-time scores, GameCasts and video highlights

Small college and regional high school coverage

The same innovative local and national advertising opportunities that ESPN.com offers

George Bodenheimer also stated, “Over time, I expect the local sites to be significant profit drivers for our company. We don’t have a local radio sales force is not going to be an inhibitor. We’re just going to have to look at a different model.”
