Ernie Johnson, Kevin McHale and Chris Webber

McHale on how the Trail Blazers can replace injured guard Brandon Roy’s scoring: “A lot of (the responsibility to score) falls on LaMarcus Aldridge to get in the post and score.  He puts up good numbers but he’s going to have to put up even better numbers.  It’s hard to say that (Marcus) Camby is really going to score for you because he’s more of a defensive guy.  I think (Nicolas) Batum at small forward is going to have to score some points for (the Trail Blazers).  They are going to have to get (scoring) from a lot of different areas.  It’s going to be an overall team effort by them to try to overcome the loss of Brandon Roy.”

McHale on Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay: “I think (Gay) will be really good.  He came in (to the league) as such a phenomenal athlete and what we saw were some dunks and some highlight stuff.  But that highlight stuff only carries you so far.  You’ve got to have a steady jump shot and work on your game, work on getting into the paint, work on your three-point shot.  To me, he can be a closer for (the Grizzlies) and win games if he works on his (ball) handling.  Getting in and being able to press the paint.  I think he’s getting better.”

Webber on Hornets point guard Chris Paul: “Chris Paul (is) my MVP for the beginning of the year.  I did not believe that (the Hornets) could win.  Kevin McHale said they were angry and had a love-fest with them.  I did not believe it and (Paul) has made me a believer.”

Johnson, McHale and Webber

Webber on Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith being considered for the Defensive Player of the Year Award: “A lot has been said about Josh Smith.  I believe he should be considered highly for the Defensive Player of the Year (Award).  To be his size and lead the league or be close to the top leader in blocked shots every year, he deserves the award.”

Webber on Milwaukee Bucks guard Corey Maggette: “(Maggette is) one of the biggest surprises of the season and he’s why Milwaukee is going to be really good.  He gets them to the line and they attack the rim.”

McHale on the Lakers’ recent struggles on defense: “(The Lakers’ defense) has taken a vacation.  They really haven’t been good defensively for the past three or four games.  They’ve got to tighten that down.  I think they feel very comfortable that they can just outscore you.  You can’t do that, you’ve got to lock down the defense.”

Johnson, McHale and Webber

McHale on what the Grizzlies need to do to win games this season: “(The Grizzlies are) going to focus on defense. If they start playing inside-out, off (forward Zach) Randolph and (center Marc) Gasol and tighten up that defense, they’ll win some games this year.”

Webber on the Memphis Grizzlies: “I think it’s all mental for this team. I honestly don’t feel they came out with the intensity they did last year. They’re not sharing the ball like they did last year. They’re not getting it inside like they did last year…You have to remember that (Marc) Gasol and Zach Randolph is where it starts, everybody else plays off of that and you’ll be a good team if that’s your goal.”

Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews joins NBA GameTime via Arena Link

Matthews on working on his 3-point shot: “Shooting a three (pointer) is part of the game. It’s not one of my strongest points but its something that I work on. I have confidence in it and I’ve had success with it. It’s just a matter of shooting with a clear head.”

Matthews on playing with Trail Blazers point guard Andre Miller: “I think it will be fun. One thing about the both of us is we want to win, we want to fight and we want to compete. That’s where our chemistry rests.”

Webber on the Atlanta Hawks needing an identity: “I didn’t believe they were going to make the playoffs. I don’t believe the Hawks are good. They don’t have identity. Josh Smith is their best defensive player but he should play the power forward. Their power forward is their center. Their three-man is the power forward. I think they have a lot of things that they need to address. They are one of the smallest teams in the NBA. If you have half of a center, If you have a guy that is 6’2’’ you can beat them up inside. They have to establish more of an identity.”
