After reaching carriage agreement with Verizon FiOS TV and Charter Communications last month, the Smithsonian Channel has signed a carriage deal with RCN Corp. on 11th Match. RCN Corp will distribute the high-definition version of the channel, with this agreement the channel will be available to 22.5 million homes in The U.S. Earlier the channel had a carriage deal only with the leading satellite TV provider DirecTV.
Executive vice president and general manager of Smithsonian Channel Tom Hayden said “The expansion is the need of the hour and more distributors will be signed in future as the demand for the high-definition programming is growing and we are exited to bring the real HD experience. Smithsonian Networks is a joint venture between Showtime Networks and the Smithsonian Institution.”
