The Inaugural Season of The Australian Baseball League Kicks Off in November 2010

The professional baseball competition held in Australia, The Australian Baseball League governed by the Australian Baseball Federation (ABF), and is jointly funded by the ABF, Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Australian Federal Government will be re-launched in November 2010 and will run though 10 weeks till January 2011.

The Australian Baseball League will feature six teams from six cities across continents. Six team names were chosen by a nationwide ‘Name Your Competition. Each team will play forty game schedule aligned in a single division.

Every team will play four home and four away games series against each of the five teams. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will move on to the play-offs, consisting of three best-of-three-games series. The play-offs will run from the last week of January through the second week of February.

The Australian Baseball League will run opposite the baseball calendar in the Northern Hemisphere, allowing the League to attract some of the game’s premier prospects from the United States, Japan, Korea and other elite international competitions.

Six Teams to participate in  The 2010 Australian Baseball League are:

  • Adelaide Bite
  • Brisbane Bandits
  • Canberra Cavalry
  • Melbourne Aces
  • Perth Heat
  • Sydney Blue Sox

The Australian Baseball League reflects the continuation of a long-term partnership between MLB and the ABF to significantly grow the sport in Australia. The strategic alliance between the two noted sporting bodies was first formalized with the establishment of the MLB Australian Academy Program (MLBAAP) in 2001. Over the past 10 years, the number of Australians playing professional and college baseball has increased 40 percent. A full 80% of all Australian professional players are products of the MLBAAP.
