TVG will $1 Million Pacific Classic from Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California on Saturday, August 28. The only million-dollar event on the California racing calendar, the 1 and 1/4-miles Pacific Classic Presented by TVG, to be run for the 20th time, is the signature contest of the 37-day Del Mar Thoroughbred Club meet. The race is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series.

The race will be shown exclusively on the TVG network, with post time scheduled for 4:45 p.m. PT. Hosting the action for TVG will be Todd Schrupp, joined by analysts Simon Bray and Paul LoDuca and reporter Christina Olivares.

TVG CEO Stephen Burn said “We are proud to sponsor the west coast’s richest and most prestigious summer racing event. he Pacific Classic has produced some amazing results over the years, and we’re looking forward to yet another exciting renewal.”

Josh Rubinstein, DMTC’s Senior Vice President, Development, said, “Maintaining the $1 Million purse level for the Pacific Classic was a priority for us, and we’re very appreciative that TVG’s support made that possible.”

As to the field, last year’s (24-1) upset winner Richard’s Kid returns to try to become only the third horse to win the event twice. But the Bob Baffert-trainee will face a stiff challenge from a talented group of opponents, led by Awesome Gem, who is coming off a win in the Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup his last time out. Remarkably, the Craig Dollase trained seven-year-old gelding will be making a record fourth appearance in the race, having finished as high as second in 2007.

Other recent stakes winners set to start are The Usual Q.T., winner of the Grade I Eddie Read Stakes on turf; Dakota Phone, who captured the San Diego Handicap; and Temple City, off a triumph in the Cougar II Handicap. Also likely for the race are Battle of Hastings, Crowded House, Hold Me Back, Isle of Giant’s and Unusual Suspect.
