Verizon Wireless has announced that it will install a temporary mobile cell site ‘Cell on Light Truck’ (COLT) near Citizens Bank Park as an increase of 40 percent or more expected increase in local network usage by Phillies fans this Red October.

COLT is deployed to accommodate an expected increase in Local Network Usage during home games

Generator-powered mobile cell site increases wireless capacity at the ballpark

Processes an additional 25,000 voice calls/hour and about 100,000 data sessions/hour

More customers will be able to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls, and send and receive text and picture messages

Verizon Wireless customers sent more than 800,000 text messages and placed more than 300,000 calls – a 40 percent increase over typical game day usage. And as the Phillies advance to the NLCS to take on the Dodgers, Verizon Wireless’ COLT deployment will enhance wireless capacity, allowing more fans to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls, send and receive text and picture messages, download games and ring tones, and access their favorite social media sites.

Ed Chan, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless’ Philadelphia Tri-State Region, said: “When we anticipate a significant surge in wireless activity, we bring in additional mobile cell sites that work along with our existing area network to compensate. The COLT enables us to handle the temporary increase in wireless usage and ensures we are providing our customers with the highest quality service from the nation’s most reliable network.”
